Mayday! Traveller Day 2019
Interview with Marc W. Miller of Far Future Enterprises
Creator of Traveller RPG
This was probably the highlight of my gaming life!
I've been playing the Traveller RPG since I was a teenager in high school (I graduated in 1986). I had been laying D&D for a while and I loved it, but I always wanted something more.
Fantasy realms were cool, but what about sci-fi?
I got into Gamma World by TSR when I was a teenager as well. This led to interests in games like Champions, Top Secret, Morrow Project, and .. what's this? Traveller?
Well, needless to say, this was exactly what I was looking for. This box set of three little black books (LBB) had everything you needed to create your own subsectors, star charts, characters, adventures, and more. And each expansion was printed on an 8.5"x11" page folded in half. So you could but these small supplements to modularly expand your ruleset. It really was brilliant.
There was a supplement for building your own Traveller starships, creating specific character classes, creating your own alien's worlds, and so on.
I can't tell you how much fun this game has brought to my life over the years as both a player and a GM (mostly as a GM). I remember when my family went on road trips or boring (to a kid) vacations, I would bring my Traveller books with me, along with a pencil, a notebook, and a few 6-sided dice. I kept myself busy and out of the adult's hair passing the time creating subsector after subsector, filled with planets of all sorts of alien origins. I imagined the vistas that could be seen on the surface... What alien life might live there? Are they intelligent? If so, what's their culture like. If not, what kind of animal is it? What does it eat? This game really broadens and expands your imagination - it takes you to the farthest reaches of your mind's eye.
That is why it was such an honor to finally meet the man who originally designed Traveller, Marc W. Miller.
I wanted to run a Traveller promotion so I contacted a few independent publishers, along with Marc, and the current publisher of Traveller by Mongoose Publishing.
At Mr. Miller's suggestion, we scheduled this event to take place on May Day in honor of bad puns and of the original distress call printed on that boxed set back in the late 1970s:
This is Free Trader Beowulf,
calling anyone . . .
Mayday, Mayday . . . we are under attack . . .
main drive is gone . . .
turret number one not responding
Mayday . . . losing cabin pressure fast
calling anyone . . . please help . . .
This is Free Trader Beowulf . . .
Mayday . . .
This interview with Marc W. Miller is over an hour and a half long and in it, we discuss everything from the origins of Traveller to where marc intends to Travel next.
